Fraunhofer ISC know-how on biodegradable functional coating materials

Workshop, Würzburg, December 6, 2016

The department »Barrier and Multifunctional Layers« of Fraunhofer ISC is going to present current developments and know-how to give a close insight into their work.

Worldwide, plastic is an intensively discussed topic. More and more problems arising from littering and micro particles in the (sea) water call for sustainable solutions for the future. Bioplastics made from bio-based or biodegradable materials are promising although, until now, they could hardly meet the standard demands, e.g. barrier properties, for product applications.

Our new bio-based and bio-degradable material class bioORMOCER® allows to produce e.g. biodegradable barrier layers which are capable of competing with conventional barrier coating materials. With their good barrier properties against water vapor and oxygen, they are the missing link for ambitious biodegradable barrier films for food, pharmaceutical or cosmetic packaging.

European Technical Coatings Congress

At the ETCC in Birmingham, 26 May 2016 Sabine Amberg-Schwab discusses Fraunhofer ISC's developments for multifunctional coatings for biodegradable food packaging. In order to get better protection against water vapor, oxygen or flavors the Fraunhofer ISC has modified its long known material class ORMOCER® to achieve biodegradability along with improved barrier and functional properties.

LOPEC

As part of Fraunhofer Alliance Polo® Fraunhofer ISC will be exhibiting from 4 to 7 April 2016 at LOPEC in Munich. Polo presents its developments for high and ultra barriers. One special focus is on flexible thin organic solar cells, which can supply environmentally friendly electricity by low production costs. However, flexible organic electronic devices are very sensitive to oxygen and water vapor. To keep their functionalities over long periods, they need special protection layers. Fraunhofer Alliance Polo® has developed barrier coatings for polymer foils, which are nearly impermeable against water vapor and oxygen. These ultra-barrier films protect highly sensitive organic photovoltaic cells while keeping their transparency and flexibility.

We are looking forward to meeting you on our booth 100 in hall B0!
