Functions

Thin films of piezoelectric material, manufactured using a sol-gel process and applied as a coating to a flexible steel substrate, can be used to provide integrated switching functions, for instance in automotive applications. For example, large-area sensors made of highly elastic, dielectric elastomers are being developed for use as seat occupancy sensors. Fraunhofer ISC researchers are also working on formulations for printable materials based on organic ferroelectrics that are compatible with printing techniques for electronic circuits and can be applied to inexpensive film substrates, for use as large-area (pressure- and temperature-sensitive) sensors and sensor arrays.
