Smart materials are materials with special mechanical properties that can be controlled by application of an electric or magnetic field.
Piezoelectric materials and dielectric elastomers respond to changes in an applied electric field, making them suitable for use as sensors and actuators, or as electromechanical energy converters.
Magnetorheological fluids and elastomers respond to changes in an applied magnetic field, making them suitable for use in haptic control systems, or workpiece holders, or in clutch systems and dampers.
By designing new materials tailored to specific applications, and by testing existing materials under different operating conditions with a view to improving their functionality and durability, it is possible to develop innovative concepts for industrial users.
